This thing surprised me.., it's a damned good sounding DAC Headphone amp. The detail was exceptional on almost any phone I plugged in, and worked perfectly with my MacBook Pro.

row2kBoth good phones. The 770s for closed back, the 990s for open back. Others to consider show up from time to time as a drop.., the AKG K553 (closed back), K7XX (open back, smooth) and if you can swing it ($399), the Fostex TH-X00 a spectacular phone in any of its versions. I have the Mahogany cups and I love them, one of the best phones I've ever owned. The Fostex literally sang with the XD-05 DAC /Amp.
I don't like recommending headphones as they are such a personal decision but the Fostex TH-X00 really floored me. I had considered using them as monitors on location recording sessions, but I can't do it.., too risky.., afraid they'd get damaged or worse, walk away, so I use them, as a personal reference, in the safety of my studio instead. Check the drops as all of these come up from time to time.
