Product Description
Engineered for a closer, more efficient, more comfortable shave, the Oristo razor is made in Canada of billet-machined 316L-grade stainless steel. The hourglass-shaped handle can accommodate both an overhand grip and a knuckle-pull grip, and the knurled grip zones provide greater stability and control—especially useful when your hand is wet while shaving in the shower Read More

This is more than 3 times the price of Merkur's entry level DE razors, 2 times the price of the Merkur Futur, and about the price of an entry level straight razor. I have all of these, and they are all great. The straight razor gives an especially good shave.
I've read about the machining on this being extra precise and all, but is it really worth that much? Sorry for the skepticism, honestly curious.

Personally, I wish I would have skipped the zinc models. That's not to say that they're bad or poor value. I, personally, find the Orista (and Feather) to feel more substantial, more luxurious. Also, I have a preference for "buying for life". I figure, over the course of the next 5-10 years, the cost difference of the razors will amount to only noise in the cost savings from blades (vs disposables). For some people, taking such a long view isn't practical.

I have this razor. I have a medium to heavy beard. I have tried many different models of double edged safety razors including models from Germany, Japan and craft produced razors from North America. I have been using the Oristo for a couple of months. This razor is discernably the finest razor I have ever used. It makes all blades I have tried perform better. Blades are simply completely chatter free. The handle has good heft, and the ergonomics of the shape and texture are second to none. If you appreciate quality $200 is a fair price. At the Massdrop price, "what are you waiting for?!?!?"

I prefer not to speak about specific models or makes, but I have been using DE safety razors for a long time and have tested many of the models of most recognizeable makers, and some esoteric hand crafted models. I am not a fan of the zinc base metal / chromed European and Chinese models. They are available at an attractive price point, but lack the precision of high quality solid metal engineered models. Oristo distinguishes itself as the finest of the engineered and machined models I have tried from any continent. If I could change the Oristo, I would have it in Marine Bronze or other copper alloy or silver alloy for the antimicrobial properties, but I have not found a similar quality shave in any design. My search is over. In fact, I will be getting additional units for the weekend place and travel, as well as one to give in the future to my son and any future son in law.

VaddisznoYou seem very passionate about this! I have a feather d2, and Merkur 37c and 34C. I do not like the feather because it is too mild and my current 37c is my third in the last two years. I tend to leave them behind when travelling. I think if Oristo made a slant blade, I would buy it. Also I have not come across video reviews of it, so a bit of a risk for me.

I was told by somebody in the business that this is the black mamba. The guy who makes this made it for the other guy. The other guy didn't treat this guy very well. I have the black mamba it's great. For this price it's a steal.

Does 'Anvil' and 'Retainer' sound odd to anyone else? Suggests pretentiousness or they don't really know the field very well. Price is pretty steep, Fendrihan SS razors are around 50CAD , Rockwell 130CAD full price. I'll pass.

I too have pledged for their Model T, and I am still waiting, very pissed off. But in all fairness, didn't the previous model (6C) get rave reviews?
It's based on those reviews that I pledged for the Model T; otherwise I was really tempted by an Oristo or AS-D2S as my first safety razor (also was tempted by the Slant but was worried it could be too aggressive as a first razor - I have been using Gillette' s Sensor for the past 30 years or so, but I'm fed up of buying cartridges).
Ps: I shave my head also, that's why I thought the Model T system was a better choice, allowing me to choose different aggressiveness for face vs head.

Wow, someone has an attitude problem. I expressed an opinion. You disagree with it, fine. My experience with Rockwell is different from yours. Not everyone who disagrees with you is a troll or a shill. Get over yourself.

MD....there are no references to how aggressive this razor is. You need to address this as ALL wet shave users have different facial hair preferences and requirements. Thank you.

If only pops still shaved like this. I still have his original Gillette from 1960. This looks really good and so tempting. What's the weight on it?

BrainFlush103 grams. Typical of an all stainless razor. They tend to be heavy. For comparison, Above the Tie razors are about 109 with the medium sized Kronos handle, and 94 with the shorter Atlas handle. The popular Merkur 34C HD, made of a cheaper steel alloy, is somewhere around 70.

Here is a picture of the disassembled head. This razor is a clone of the Razorock Black Mamba. Both this razor and Black Mamba have received good reviews.
